Marybeth Stevens is an avid and accomplished genealogist and is likely the most knowledgeable individual in Tormey research today. She has been a valuable contributor to this website and has provided many meaningful insights to countless Tormey descendants who are researching their family trees.
Marybeth began her research with her own family tree in 1988. Thus far, she has traced her line back to her great-great-grandfather, James Tormey (born in about 1810), who lived in Derrynagaragh (Dernegarah), County Westmeath, Ireland. As was a common arrangement in Ireland at the time, he leased 39 acres of land (from a Richard McCormick), on which he ran a farm and a corn mill.
One of James' sons, Marybeth's great-grandfather Laurence Tormey, was a shopkeeper in Castlepollard, County Westmeath, where he lived until about 1869, when he emigrated to America with his wife, Bridget Wilson, and the first of what would eventually be seven children. They arrived in New York, living in lower Manhattan. Later generations lived in Brooklyn.
Another son of James Tormey, Edward Tormey (brother of Marybeth's great-grandfather Laurence Tormey), inherited the lease of the farm and mill from his father. He and his wife, Jane Gillick, had several children. As of yet, Marybeth is not sure whether they stayed in Ireland or eventually emigrated to America.
In trying to research her family's history back beyond her great-great-grandfather James Tormey, and with the hope of possibly finding living relatives in Ireland, Marybeth has broadened her research to include many other Tormey families.
Together Fellow Researcher, Mary-Deirdre Tormey Coraggio, Marybeth has been gathering and assembling a database that now includes information on over 500 families, reaching back multiple generations. (Of particular interest to some will be her records on Westmeath Tormeys.) Their combined database has helped many family genealogists to uncover missing links and piece together their family trees
In addition, Marybeth has shared many insights and resources that have helped to make this Tormey Family History web site more successful. Her valuable contributions are greatly appreciated.
