Haven't been on here for quite some time, and saw Larry Tormey returned from his recent trip to the Old Sod, to do some searching and have some fun. I think he, at least had fun! I hear from Marybeth Stevens about Tormeys in Argentina and British Columbia Is there no one coming to visit on here that might have information to the settlement of the Tormeys in Argentina? Would be another interesting link. Enjoy the site as always, nice to see new names and links added. Slainte, Joan

Just back from Ireland and had an interesting time further seeking the roots of my Tormeys in the Archerston, W.Meath area--thanks to Marybeth Tormey Stevens' guidance. Found no traces of my Tormeys but did visit Fr. Sean Garland in Clonmellon who referred me to a local area historian/shanakie, Jimmy Fagan. Had a marvelous visit with Jimmy who, from his recollection of the lore/history of the area of Archerstown was able to tell me that my Tormeys were dirt poor farm people who had probably been evicted o to the roads by the Brits back in the bad days. A very memorable experience ! Sadly, despite my having had published a letter in the "Westmeath Topic" several weeks prior to our departure for Ireland, in which I stated that we would be in W. Meath and would love to hear in advance from any Tormeys in the area---there was no response. As there was none from the article that Marybeth's friend, Castlepollard's Michael Conlon had helped write in the October '99 "Westmeath Examiner" about the Tormey-clan reunion which had taken place at Marybeth's CT home in September '99. It is a bit frustrating when there is never any response to our collective efforts to reach out to Tormeys in Ireland and there is never a response. On the more positive side, was able to meet up with some Cork relatives on my paternal grandfather's side (Barrys) whom I never knew existed nor they, me. Would like to pursue any leads that anyone might offer re my maternal grandmother's people-Shinnicks -from Cork. The Ireland of 2000 is not the Ireland that we knew in the past. Andthat is not so good. Nor is it not so bad.

Comments:
I agree w/ Marybeth Stevens on her origins of the Tormey name. Like it or not it is Norse/Viking/Icelandic. Her research has parralled mine. I have read the Icelandic Sagas of 847 and there is no doubt that we are basically Viking. I note some comment about the Tormey clan. This is ridiculous. In ancient society a clan devolved from a common ancestor. Example: Cartaigh=Carthy=MacCarthy meaning son of Cartaigh. Tormey was a Norse pre-name meaning in Icelandic Thormodr-- which meant Thor's man. In he invasion of Ireland by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th century they burned Limerick and sailed north up the Shannon River to Lochree, and settled there. There settlement was present day Longford Town and in Viking was known as Boat Haven. Today it is known as Longphort. Those named Tormey settled east of Lochree originally in what is now Co. West Meath. If anyone has information to the contrary, I would be most pleased to be corrected and have contrary information.

How far back have you traced your ancestors (name & date)?: 1870's - William Tormey
Do you know where in Ireland your Tormey ancestors are originally from?: Mahera, Athlone near Lough Ree

Comments:
Further to my earlier comments I have come across some more information. My great great grand uncle William Tormey born approx. 1870 grew up in Mahera/ Glasson/ Tubberclaire near Athlone. traveled to America in the late 1800's. There is an interesting story behind his trip! When William was about 18 he started working in Miltown house for a Lord Castlemaine. According to my grand uncle he was a dashing fellow who caused many a cailin's heart to flutter! One of these girls happened to be the daughter of the lord and lady of C stlemaine! William fell in love with the young girl which consequently proved to be a near fatal error! Needless to say when the Lord Castlemaine found out about the little mismatch he was none to happy! William was summonsed immediately before him. He had two choices! 1) Stay and face the barrel of a gun! or 2) Be banished to America for ever - never to breathe a word of his affair! And so it was, young William set off down a lonely road - without his new found love to board a ship to America! The rest of the family were sworn to secrecy - to discuss the matter was to their peril. And so it was - William begun his new life in America,( never heard from again to my knowledge) In 1912 or so (during the troubled times) Miltown house was burned to the ground and the castlemaine family returned to England. I believe a number of William's sibling's (of which there were many!) also traveled to America and beyond! If any Tormey's anywhere can add to this tragic story - and maybe give it a happy ending my family would be glad to hear from them. I am currently in Australia on a round the world trip but I will be returning to Ireland in a couple of months. I will update this web with any new information I can find - I believe our local Parochial house has a full record of all my ancestors so I will be able to add exact dates etc. I look forward to hearing from ye Slan Ronan O Tormaigh

Haven't visited here in a while, glad to be back. Marybeth suggested I come in and see our dear "family member" Joan Nulty who we met in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland and bonded with immediately - along with her wonderful and large family. I am also intrigued by the Anthony Tormey who says he is from Miami, FL "right now". Hey, Anthony, I lived in Miami for over 50 years and now am in Broward! Where have you been? The only Tormeys I knew in Miami were immediate family and one George Tormey who disappeared from the phone book many years ago. Being Marybeth's sister gives me the rewards of finding out about our ancestors in Ireland, and going there with her, and visiting the wonderful people and places that seemed so much like "home". Michael, and now Anthony, let's hope we all can visit here in Florida in January, along with any other Tormeys who visit during these lovely months. Maybe, even one L. TORMEY from New Jersey! I am definitely going to visit here more often, and Michael I echo all the others in gratitude f r all your work and effort to bring us all together - way cool! Siobhan
